These owls sounds were recorded before dawn in winter months, deep in the heart of the Dorset countryside. I admit that I am no owl expert, but I am sure others listening to the sound of owls hooting, will know which type of owl it is making all the noise. I am often out walking with my Zoom H1n Recorder, before dawn with my trusty dog Bear. I am sure that Bear often wonders what I am up to, as every time I hear an owl in the vicinity, we have to stop so that I can record the sounds that the owls make. I do feel confident that when I hear this, the owls are actually communicating with each other. Maybe someone can tell me if the owls are hooting to mark their territory, or is the communication something else?

Sometimes as we walk along the path, an owl would circle above Bear. The owl is circling very low and you feel as though you could reach out and touch it. I sometimes wonder if the owl does this hoping that Bear causes a mouse or something to break cover? I am always amazed when this happens, how silent an owl is when in flight. Most other birds you can hear when they flap their wings, but an owl is totally silent.
